The Kulung Community is most primordial and distinct indigenous peoples of Nepal having a separate language, culture, ancestral domain as well social structure and permanently have been residing around the Mt. Everest region; which called as ‘Mahakulung-The greater Kulung’ since the first time their ancestors had cultivated the area, being officiated to a common language, culture and economic activities and demonstrating psychological unity among themselves. However, at now they are scattered throughout the county in a small number besides the ‘Mahakulung’

It is one of the most marginalized ethnic groups in the country. As this community is resided in the remote mountainous/hilly areas, the basic infrastructures and services like motor roads, electricity, clean drinking water, education, communication and health services are not available to them.

The majority of the Kulung peoples are depended on traditional agriculture. Due to the unproductive land conditions, they are not able to produce adequate food from their farms. They do not have education and therefore have no access to productive resources and decision making process. They are compelled to migrate in search of labor for their livelihood. A few peoples are depend on tourism industry.  According the national census 2001 the total population of the community is 18,686 only but we do not believe it because most of the Kulung peoples are have been made Raised by force.

After the restoration of multi-party democracy in Nepal, the government has established National Foundation for Development of Indigenous Nationalities (NFDIN) under the NFDIN Act-2058 with the aim of mainstreaming the marginalized indigenous groups. The NFDIN, an autonomous body is established under the Ministry of Local Development chaired by the Prime Minister- has denied to recognize the Kulung peoples as indigenous.  That’s why Kulung community has been continuously depriving from the development opportunities which exist in the state.

Since a decade the Association of Nepal Kirat Kulung Language and Cultural Development (ANKKLCD). (Umbrella organization of Kulung peoples) has been making an effort for the legal recognition of this Kulung community. As a result the govt. of Nepal has set up the High Level Task Force and that the task force has recommended to the Nepal Govt. for its legal recognition but the govt. is doing delay on this.

In fact, this Himalayan vulnerable community needs help from national and international community to improve their livelihood as well overall human rights.
