Erin Gough wrote a new blog post: ¿cómo es? 1 month, 3 weeks ago · View

As one of 600 million people living with a disability, I am often asked, “what is it like?” I find it difficult to answer this question, as to me, that’s no different from asking “what’s it like to have freckles?” or “what’s it like to be tall?” To me, being disabled is definitely part of [...]

At 4.35am on September 4 , 2010, a 7.1 earthquake struck near my home city of Christchurch, causing billions of dollars’ worth of damage, but miraculously taking no lives. While residents struggled to come to terms with the impact of this natural disaster and while aftershocks continued to shake the ground and the people on it for [...]

With just over eight days until I fly out to New Delhi, the nerves and excitement continue to increase. There are so many unknowns ahead of me; so many questions I am asking myself. Have I made the right decision traveling solo for the first time? Will I be able to manage alone? What if something goes wrong? But despite all the questions, anxieties and worries, there is a wonderful feeling of excitement building within me. This trip is going to change my life in so many ways that not even I can comprehend yet. It will give me the most independence, empowerment, and confidence I have ever had. Yes, it is a risk. There are always risks. But it is also such a wonderfully incredible, life-changing opportunity that I can’t not take it. I know that if I can travel to Delhi independently, I can go anywhere and do anything I want with my life. And that is an amazing prospect. See you all there for a fantastic eight day event with a lifelong impact.
You are such an inspiration Erin. You aren’t totally alone! You will have an excited me somewhere near you on the plane! I am looking forward to meeting you so much

In New Zealand, disability support funding is limited, constraining and restrictive. Though there is carer support funding available, family members are not allowed to claim it, even if they provide care for a disabled family member full-time. This makes things very difficult for people with disabilities and their families. For parents with children who have [...] -

Have all my vaccinations, appropriate medications (insect repellent, ”stoppers” in case I get a stomach bug etc), and e-ticket for India. Now just to apply for a Visa. So excited! Less than 9 weeks to go.

Hey Mehzabin,
Thanks for all of those. I’ll have a think. I may be able to do a presentation on inclusive education and disabilities, based mostly on personal experience. -

Hey, thanks for the welcomes. Sure, I would be willing to give it a try. Perhaps I could do something to do with creative arts/media and disability such as disability theatre, or using writing and blogging to cope with one’s disability? I can’t promise much but I am always willing to give things a go and would appreciate the assistance and guidance on how to go about this.

Hi there, I enjoyed reading your blog post and I agree with you. No one is born to stand out. Rather, the more good one does, the more change one creates, the more attitudes one changes, the more one stands out as a leader. I believe everyone, no matter where they are from or what [...]

Hi there David, Anthony, Zara and Mehzabin, Thanks so much for your feedback from various parts of the world! It is great to hear of what things are like for people with disabilities where you live as well as your experiences with them. It’s great to hear that your communities are mostly inclusive, and if [...]

Welcome Erin!!!
Welcome Erin!
Erin would you like to facilitate or lead a session with fellow Action Partners on Creative Arts/Media? Please let us know. We would be happy to assist and guide you.

Hi Erin,
Here is how you can start on planning a session by brainstroming the following:
1. what goals/objectives you want to achieve from the session?
2. who is your target audience?
3. what activities or tools you want to use to achieve your objectives?
4. what are your expectations from the session?
5. How long a session do you want to run?
6. what resources might you need to help you run the session?I am very interested in learning about disability rights and issues myself. Would love to hear from you. I would specially like to hear your feedback about how educators can make their classrooms more inclusive for the disabled?
more brainstorming guidelines for you:
7. what cultural / religious / ability differences, etc might you need to consider to conduct your sessionHey Mehzabin,
Thanks for all of those. I’ll have a think. I may be able to do a presentation on inclusive education and disabilities, based mostly on personal experience.

Interestingly, New Zealand is only one of three countries in the world without a written constitution. It gets it’s constitution from a variety of things such as the Doctrine of Parliamentary Sovereignty and the Rule of Law as well as practices and conventions and some legislation instead of from one single legal document. I think [...]

Hi everyone, I would like to begin a discussion on the area of disability rights, which as some of you will know, is very important to me especially since I am physically disabled myself. I am often asked what ‘disability rights’ actually are, so first of all, I am going to try and explain my [...]
