Country AUSTRALIA
Biography I’m Jaleesa Donovan, I’m 22 years young and I was born and raised in the South West of Sydney in Bankstown. My father is an Aboriginal Man, his family being from the Dungatti and Gumbaingirr tribe on the North Coast of NSW. My mother is Maltese and Australian. I live in the community of Bankstown which is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Australia. The population of the community is about 26,000 plus. In 2007 I graduated from High School majoring in Music. I am a performing artist and have been singing since I was four. I really look forward to helping Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people focus on their talents and interests, keeping them off the streets and at the same time developing cultural identity in the community. I applied for OIYP because I believe I can become a catalyst for change. I love meeting new people and listening to there stories. I have an open heart and a passion for Equality for all. Although I have a strong passion towards change in the Indigenous Community of Australia, No matter where you come from, what language you speak, what relgion you follow, your sexuality; I respect each and every person who surrounds me. This year in May 2012 I will finally begin studying in a Bachelor of Indigenous Studies Majoring in Politics. With so much that has been happening over the past few years in this Country in terms of our Government Leadership and the issues our Indigenous communties still face today, I have decided its time I worked towards gaining a deeper understanding of Global Politics, so that I can be a positive Advocate for change in our World where we need it most. I am currently working as a Casual Administration Assistant at the University of Western Sydney in the Badanami Centre for Indigenous Education. (Bankstown Campus)
