Biography Name: Stephanie Jesscia King Position: Research Trainee DOB: 02/12/1984 Family Group: Wannyi /Garawa My name is Stephanie Jessica King, I am a young person from Mount Isa and have lived and worked here most of my life. I am very passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of people in my community and about making our city that I love a safer place to live. I am passionate about creating opportunities for young people through leadership development and have worked on a number of projects for young people. I am a Research Trainee at the Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, this role requires me to assist the reseearch unit with health related projects. In 2011 , I was previously the Coordinator of the Mount Isa Safe Community Initiative; my role was to drive the action of the Advisory Team who is working towards a vision of making Mount Isa a safer community by implementing injury prevention and community safety projects. The Mount Isa Safe Community has partnerships with a number of groups who focus on making our city safer. In 2010, my life changed as I was selected along with 299 young people to be an Action Partner in the Oxfam International Youth Partnerships (OIYP) program. OIYP is a global network of young people working with their communities to create positive, equitable and sustainable change. The first activity of the OIYP program was called Kaleidoscope an eight-day event that I got to attend in New Delhi, India during the 20-28th of November 2010. It was a life changing experience to say the least. I learned so much about global issues , I learned about issues like education , health , peace and conflict resolution and about myself and in short it made me a better person. My vision and commitment for the next 3 years, is to work alongside other inspirational Australia and global action partners, as one we work towards creating positive changes in the areas of health, education, climate change, human rights and youth advocacy. To be an Action Partner, is an honour for me , it means and I am so proud to be working with amazing, talented and passionate young people, who share the same vision, the vision of a better world. There are soo many young and amazing people out there playing their part, taking action and creating changes, they are leading by example and it reconfirms my belief that we can make a difference. My advice for young people is to believe in yourself and your abilities and to take every opportunity that you can to build your leadership skills, your knowledge and to be proactive in your community. This community needs young people like you to step up, take on leadership roles and make a positive difference.
