VOICE NEWSLETTER

The VOICE newsletter is a publication that is produced monthly by and for current and past Action Partners. It is an opportunity for Action Partners to share with the network and wider subscribers, the positive work they are doing in their communities to create local solutions to global inequalities. The VOICE also highlights possibilities for Action Partners to network, partner and build coalitions on the issues they are passionate about.

The topic each month has a strong thematic focus based on the interests communicated by Action Partners, the key activities within the OIYP program, what is happening at the time in the world and the priorities of Oxfam.

Food and You

This animated story journeys through the broken food system and then looks at the transformation that is already underway to bring about change. It brings it back to you, the individual at the root level, and invites you to be part of the movement to grow a better future.

We hope that the video will enable Action Partners  and their communities to learn more about how the food system may be impacting them.  Over the next period at OIYP, we will be offering support to all Action Partners to develop strategic campaigns and projects that will effectively address the food crisis as experienced in the context of your own community

We urge you to send the Food and You video to your family, friends, colleagues and community to raise awareness of the issues that are impacting you and your community, and to help you build partnerships and coalitions to support your work on food justice.

OIYP Kaleidoscope 2010 Delhi

OIYP Kaleidoscope 2010 was held in Delhi, India, during November last year. It marked the beginning of the 2010-2013 cycle, which brought together 300 Action Partners to promote a global network of young people working with their communities to create positive, equitable and sustainable change.

Food Justice

Regardless of where we are from, our cultural, social or sexual identity, our economic situation or political orientation, each and every one of us is impacted by issues related to food justice. Food security is a basic human right yet today, almost a billion people are hungry. Millions more lack sufficient knowledge and power to make informed decisions about what they eat and the majority of small scale producers are disempowered and limited in their capacity to produce food effectively.

Food justice is under the spotlight now more than ever as food and fuel prices continue to rise, chronic hunger and vulnerability becomes a reality for more people as each day passes, the impacts of climate change grow more evident and widespread, natural resources become eroded and scarce, sustainable production in constrained, and access to land, markets and technology is an increasing challenge for vast populations.

OIYP has found that at least 1 in 3 Action Partners from the 2010-2013 cycle from Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Australia are either directly working on or are impacted by issues relating to food injustice.

In light of just how important food justice issues are in all our lives, especially in the current global climate, food justice will be a priority area for the OIYP program for the next two years. OIYP aims to support Action Partners from all cycles (2000, 2004, 2007 and 2010) in their effort to build a global Food Justice Movement.

GROW

Oxfam recently launched its new campaign called GROW, which acknowledges that the current global food system is broken for most of us and that there are deep injustices embedded in the way the system works. GROW supports and advocates for new ways to grow, share and live together, to make food justice a reality.

You can access the GROW report here. Also, check out GROW’s interactive map on global food price increases here

OIYP Food Justice Forum

To support these conversations on Food Justice, OIYP has created a food justice page for Action Partners on facebook. This page is called the OIYP Food Justice Forum. This forum is a space for Action Partners from all cycles (2000, 2004, 2007 and 2010), as well as interested people outside of the OIYP network, to come together to share the impacts, develop partnerships, exchange resources and to encourage collective action on issues relating to food justice.

We encourage you to join and actively participate in the OIYP Food Justice Forum NOW!  Simply like the page and share your food story!

3things is an initiative of Oxfam Australia, and since 2008, has been working with young Australians. 3things  focuses on working with new audiences of young Australians; particularly those who may not be aware of social justice issues or unsure of the relevant ways they can bring about positive social change around the world. 3things bridges that gap by providing relevant opportunities and support for young Australians to get involved in ways that are meaningful to them – whether you’ve got 3 minutes, 3 weeks or more. They start by posing a simple question: what are 3things that you can do to help change the world? 3things is demonstrating that if we all take steps to ethically, sustainably and generously we can change the world one decision at a time.
